“August is the slow, gentle month that stretches out the longest across the span of a year. It yawns and lingers on with the light in its palms.” — Victoria Erickson
Thoughts for this Month
I love the idea of August as this sweet, easy time, but the truth is that for me it never has been. Even as a child (who loved school!) I would start worrying about September as soon as August came around.
Some of it was excitement, some of it was worry and fear—would I be able to open my locker, would my friends still like me?
I’ve never been able to shake that engrained anxiety. But with yoga in my life I am able to give myself a break from it. I am able to let August yawn and linger and be light in my palms.
This month at Shine we will actively practice Emptying Out Before We Begin. The idea behind this concept is an old one in yoga philosophy. There is a true and central part of us that never changes, called Purusha and then there is everything else, Prakrati. The really useful part of this concept for us is that Prakrati is all matter. It’s trees and sidewalks and pizza, but it is also our thoughts and our roles in life. It is everything that is not our pure being.
One school of yoga, most clearly defined by the key text, The Yoga Sutras according to Patanjali, set out to give people the means of separating their true selves from all the Prakrati. Some of the ways to separate the two include Asana ( the physical postures in yoga), the Yamas and Niyamas (moral behavior), and Meditation.
Why is this helpful for modern life? Well when Sunday or August, or anxiety creeps in, begin to separate the worries from your true self. Peel them off one by one. Empty out so your true self can be the light in your palms—giving to the world and drawing back into yourself.
With love,
Sara

The Practice is the Path, by Tias Little. Chapter 1: Empty Before You Fill Up. Tias Little’s book is wonderful and inspired themes for both August and September. I highly recommend it!
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, A Biography by Gordon White. I adore this book, it explains the context around the development of dualism and Patanjali’s sutras, which helped me understand Yoga Philosophy in a much deeper way.
Living the Sutras: A Guide to Yoga Wisdom Beyond the Mat by Kelly DiNardo and Amy Pearce-Hayden. I use this book in my Yoga Teacher Training to apply the Yoga Sutras to modern life.
This month we will be practicing the following in our classes.
August Theme: Empty out before you fill up
Physical Focus: Hips
Energetic Focus: Ease
Posture: Sukasana, cross legged seat. Yoga’s original posture. Translation: Steady and sweet.
Note: This will show up in different ways depending on your teacher’s thoughts and the style of the class.
And will not be the only thing we will practice. Classes will be the same, just with this focus drawn into them.
Glossary
Purusha: Pure consciousness, unchanging true self.
Prakrati: All matter, including thoughts and roles such as daughter, parent, friend, doctor, etc.
Dualism: The split between matter and the self as opposed to a union with it.

I love the Podcast, Poetry Unbound. It reminds me to think deeply and to love and notice small things. Linked below is a poem and discussion I think is especially relevant to this month’s practice.
-
Summer Bounty Salad. I love peaches and stone fruit so much. Unfortunately we are the stage where the organic ones are still available, but hard as a rock, which means you have to heat them up to get some flavor out.
I used blueberries, which are still in season, rather than blackberries and skipped the cheese.

Last month my son went to Rock Climbing Camp and I had the great pleasure of walking along the rock path at the Buffalo Harbor State Park. It was so nice to be by the water early in the morning and reminded me of all the lovely things I take for granted.
